The Plaxton brand has been in existence for more than 111 years, and nowadays Alexander Dennis – Plaxton is continuing to thrive, with the Scarboroug­h plant at the heart of expansion and growth plans.

The business vision is to achieve a £1 billion turnover by the early 2020s. This year, its 40th in business, Flamingo Land became the most successful privatelyo­wned attraction in UK history.

Last year the zoo and theme park received more visitors than Stonehenge and St Paul’s Cathedral – success that is down to its brilliant team and diverse range of attraction­s. By Angels in 2009, and the venue dressing company went from 12 weddings in the first nine months to 135 events in 2014.

She was Scarboroug­h’s first Town Centre Manager and a founder of Scarboroug­h Shopmobili­ty. Kathryn Knowles set up Cura Financial Services with her husband to help people who are struggling to get insurance.

She used her own health experience­s to tackle the way insurers think, and to fight inequality. Saint Cecilia’s Care Group has had its most successful year, despite a challengin­g backdrop, thanks largely to its recruitmen­t and retention strategy and an excellent team of staff. McCain Foods is the largest private employer in the Scarboroug­h area, some 700 dedicated employees – it may be a global concern but its people are at the heart of this family business. A reputation for providing high quality training and learning to its customers has meant that YH Training Services is making a real difference to people and businesses, locally and regionally. Dale Power Solutions faced a serious skills shortage in 2007.

Now, thanks to an innovative recruitmen­t programme, it promotes apprentice­ships to 11,000 young people each year, and this year won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise. Hallgarth Accountant­s has an excellent retention record, and its employees feel valued, challenged and inspired.

“It’s what makes Monday mornings easy,” says its boss. The Bridlingto­n Dental Studio has had its most exciting 12 months in the 100-year history of the building as a dental practice. It has three new dental surgeries, and is growing at a tremendous rate, with new services and more staff. Venture Seafoods, of Carnaby, is the largest crab meat producer on the east coast of England.

It exports shellfish around the world and is looking to reduce food waste with a new machine from Canada. Colemans Cider Company , of Kilham, hopes to become Yorkshire’s biggest cider maker.
