More race action on seafront as Tour is back
Barrowcliff pupils help to announce the route
Scarborough will host the finish of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire’s third stage, on Saturday May 4, as well as a women’s stage.
Scarborough will host another nail-biting finish when the Tour de Yorkshire returns to the town next year. The route for the 2019 race was announced last Friday and stage three, on Saturday May 4, will see the cyclists head from Bridlington to Scarborough, via Whitby.
The second and final stage of the women’s race will take place on the same day, following the same 132km route.
Pupils from Barrowcliff School helped to make the announcement in Leeds last week, wearing T-shirts spelling out their town’s name.
Headteacher Mark Rogers said: “Our children are excited about the Tour de Yorkshire coming to Scarborough again. It is good to see our children interested in something that is different and exciting and shows Scarborough in such a brilliant light.
“The children that we asked to attend the announcement were really excited to represent Scarborough and to get on stage to promote the town.
“In the past, we have celebrated the fact that the Tour de Yorkshire is coming and have done work around the Tour. It is something to which we can attach a lot of our curriculum areas – maths, geography, art, English, they can all be linked to the Tour. It is something we focus on and promote within our school and community because we don’t want our children to miss out on it.”
Day three’s racing sets off from Bridlington Spa and heads out of town on the A165 up to the Dotterel roundabout.
The field then goes to Hunmanby, Flixton, Cayton, Seamer, East Ayton and Hackness.
The first climb is the Cote de Silpho and then there is a sprint at Harwood Dale. Next stops are Fylingdales and Robin Hood’s Bay before another climb will test the peloton at the Cote de Hooks House Farm
After another sprint at Whitby Abbey, crowds can cheer on the cyclists Sandsend, the Cote de Lythe Bank, Ellerby Bank and Egton .
There is a third climb at the Cote de Grosmont, and after passing through Sleights, the final climb is the Cote De Ugglebarnby, before the final stretch back south along the A171 and into Cloughton and Burniston, before reaching Scarborough town centre and the sprint finish on the seafront.
