Filey Steampunk Weekend. The weekend’s activities are scheduled for May 18-19, which will be the third event of its kind.

Mr Cassady-Bishop said: “Our objectives are to provide an attraction for visitors to the town, to promote the enthusiasts and genre of steampunk and to entertain even non-enthusiasts as steampunk is a very visual medium.”

As the event will be held around the town many local firms are taking part by providing facilities and venues for music, competitions and entertainment for the event. There will be a variety of entertainment for everyone to enjoy – whether an “enthusiast” or not!

“There’s a ‘Trading Emporium’ and food court in the Evron Centre, an evening cabaret featuring three well-known acts, including the splendid Professor Elemental,” Mr Cassady-Bishop added. “There’s tea duelling which is a spectator sport of tea and biscuits, street entertainment and there’s Tanks on The Beach involving two armoured carriers taking passengers for a spin.”

Other acts confirmed in the line-up in the ‘Cabaret of Curiosities’, to be held on the Saturday, are Alice’s Night Circus and Ellie Etiole’s Burlesque. Tickets will only be required for the evening cabaret performances.

A small timetable of events has already been released for some of the weekend’s entertainment. On Friday a Steampunk pub quiz will be hosted by the Cobblers Inn, from Friday to Sunday ‘Rendezvous Point’ will be hosted by The Star, and free street entertainment, emporium and food court, tank rides on the beach and tea duelling will all be held on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend will end with Steampunk ‘Discomotion’, hosted by The Belle Vue. Filey Probus Club have hosted a social gathering to celebrate the birthday of a former President.

Don Smith will turn 90 on 20 January but members of the club together with their wives and guests from Hunmanby and Burlington Probus Clubs came together to organise a surprise birthday party at the start of the year.

The Masons, the Rotary and Lions Clubs also attended the event which included a presentation by Robert Child and a light buffet.

Elise Walden, Don’s daughter, organised the party. She said: “We decided to celebrate on 2 January because the first meeting of the Probus Club fell on that day and the ladies could be invited, and anyone that knows my dad knows that he’s a ladies man.

“He knew nothing about it.

“You should have seen his face, he’s still talking about it now which is lovely and the other thing is, everybody was smiling, everybody was laughing. It was really excellent.”
