Remember the shops that we’ve lost?
How many do you remember?
It’s a turbulent time on high streets up and down the land with shops large and small struggling to survive.
Ten years ago this month, Woolworths was the biggest name to go under, with hundreds of properties in town centres around the country left empty when it suddenly stopped trading.
The building which housed Scarborough’s branch in Westborough has been taken over by Poundland, but Woolworths’ demise was just the start of a number of national chains and much-loved independents who have moved out of town.
Greenwoods Menswear is the latest victim, with its outlet in the Brunswick Centre closing down just after Christmas.
In between, Scarborough has lost Burton, HMV, Comet and Thorntons, among many others. How many do you remember shopping at before they disappeared during the past decade?
