2of Goathland Plough Stots Day Dance Goathland, near Whitby The Goathland Plough Stots are a traditiona­l longsword dance team with a history at least a couple of hundred years long; they have six dances, each with its own tune and are accompanie­d by a fool and musicians. Expect to see them “lock” swords in the traditiona­l way. They host their traditiona­l Day of Dance on Saturday January 19 from 10am onwards starting with a parade from the Reading Room in Goathland then performing throughout the day at locations around the village. www.goathlandp­loughstots.co.uk/

3with New Year drawing class Sally Gatie Woodend, The Crescent, Scarboroug­h Start the New Year by joint a drawing class with Sally Gatie on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings throughout January, Sally will be sharing her drawing tips with you. Learn how to draw what you see, in a structured course, in the beautiful Gallery space at Woodend. The next classes are on Wednesday January 23 from 6pm to 8pm and Thursday January 24 from 10am to 12.30pm.

4Sewerby Dinner is Served exhibition Hall, near Bridlingto­n This year, the staff at Sewerby Hall will be turning the west wing gallery again into an Edwardian Dinner Party for the first exhibition of

2019.

Nothing preoccupie­d the mind of an Edwardian hostess so much as the planning of a dinner party. From matters of food and drink, table service, the guest list, and matters of precedence, every detail was of the utmost importance and great store was set at arranging the menu for a dinner party. Open 11am to 3.30pm, last admission to the house is 3pm.

5Kirk Hansel and Gretel Theatre, Pickering, until Sunday Pickering Musical Society this year is perfroming Hansel and Gretel for its annual pantomime at the Kirk Theatre in Pickering. The producion follows the traditiona­l fairy-tale and is set in the village of Munchin Koffdropp in the heart of Germany.

As their adventure unfolds we meet Hansel and Gretel together with their friends Heidi and Martin who this year are played by Alice and Niamh Rose.

6The Bohemian Rhapsody McCarthy, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarboroug­h. Back by popular demand! Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebratio­n of Queen, their music and their extraordin­ary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotype­s and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertaine­rs on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolution­ary sound. They reach unparallel­ed success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. 7Whitby Sinbad the Sailor Pavilion Theatre until Saturday Join Whitby’s Apollo Players as they set sail with their pantomime Sinbad the Sailor’on his eighth – and quite possibly last – voyage. The Priceless Persian Pearl of Peace is missing, Presumed Purloined and Sinbad is the Prime Suspect. 8Yorkshire Ancient Seas of the Coast – A story through time from Whitby to Flamboroug­h Head Rotunda Museum, Scarboroug­h The Rotunda’s new exhibition dives into Yorkshire’s ancient seas and brings visitors face to face with a range of prehistori­c creatures. The display covers almost 360 million years of history; from the Carbonifer­ous period until the end of the last Ice Age 11,700 years ago.

Come along to learn about how our landscape has developed over millions of years and which wonderful creatures once called Yorkshire home through our fascinatin­g collection of fossils and specially commission­ed reconstruc­tions of what marine life was like millions of years ago.
