Milestone birthday for Scarborough’s maritime centre

-

Volunteers and supporters of Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre have come together to celebrate the museum’s 10th birthday.

The centre was opened by the then myor, Cllr Bill Chatt, in 2009 and was initially based at 36 Eastborough, just across the road from the current premises.

Mark Vesey, one of the volunteers, said: “It was quite difficult at the beginning, trying to raise the money, get the interest and get volunteers but we’ve soldiered on and the further we went along more people joined in and supported us.

“You get the feeling that people really wanted the museum, we’ve raised enough money to buy the building and we won the Queen’s Award for Volunteering in 2016 which was the cherry on the cake.

“It’s been an amazing journey and it’s great to get to this milestone.” Volunteers celebrated with a maritimethemed cake baked by Lindy Lou Creations, of Eastborough.
