Disappointment as BBC confirms no second series of ‘Scarborough’
BBC One sitcom, which gave TV viewers shots of the glorious seafront, has been cancelled
BBC One sitcom Scarborough won’t come back for a second series, it has been confirmed.
The sitcom, with comedian Jason Manford and Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley in the lead roles, will not return to our screens.
The announcement was made on Twitter by the account of the show which is managed by writer and director Derren Litten.
In a tweet, he said: “Today [Thursday November 21] we learned the BBC has decided not to recommission Scarborough for a 2nd series. Obviously we are all extremely disappointed but we’d like to thank all our fans for their wonderful support. You can still enjoy Scarborough on @ BBCiPlayer for another 10 months.”
The show aired over the course of six weeks in September and October. It was filmed in Scarborough, particularly along the seafront, during the summer, showing off the town in all its glory.
Catherine Tyldesley, who played Karen in the series, tweeted: “Gutted to hear @ Scarborough_tv won’t be running for a second series. My favourite job to date... I really feel it filled a huge gap in the comedy world.”
Actress Maggie Ollerenshaw played salon owner Geraldine, which writer-director Litten told The Scarborough News was his favourite character. She was also “devastated” by the decision, adding that Scarborough was the “best tv comedy I’ve ever been part of and best public response I’ve ever had to a character I’ve played.”
Over 15 million viewers are thought to have tuned in to watch the six episodes, broadcast every Friday at 9.30pm. The first episode alone received four million viewers.
A spokesperson from the BBC said: “Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions to make room for new comedy on BBC One. We are very proud of Scarborough and would like to thank Derren and the team for all their hard work on the series.”
