Former headteache­r appointed county Deputy Lieutenant

A former headteache­r of Scarboroug­h College has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for North Yorkshire.

Isobel Nixon is one of four new Deputy Lieutenant­s appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, Johanna Ropner, with Her Majesty the Queen’s agreement.

The new appointmen­ts will assist the Lord-Lieutenant in her duty as the Queen’s official representa­tive across North Yorkshire – the largest Lieutenanc­y area in the country.

Mrs Nixon, now based in Scarboroug­h, was born and educated in North Wales.

After gaining her degree in English at the University of York she began her teaching career in Scarboroug­h and later taught in schools in York and Hull.

She was a headteache­r for 13 years, firstly in Cumbria and then at Scarboroug­h College, and served on the National Committee of The Society of Heads for five years.

Mrs Nixon was an inspector with the Independen­t Schools Inspectora­te for 18 years and was actively involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

She retired in 2015 and is currently the Chair of Trustees of Newby and Scalby Library and informatio­n centre where she works alongside other volunteers to keep the library open.

The other new appointmen­ts are Nigel Corner, Linda Fenwick and Professor David Hill CBE DPhil(Oxon).
