Mayor Hazel to get an extended term

Scarborough borough’s Mayor is to get an extended-term in her role after the scheduled ceremonial handover was postponed.

With meetings not taking place at Scarborough Town Hall it means Scarborough Council’s Annual Meeting and Mayor-making ceremony have had to be put on hold.

This means the borough Mayor, Cllr Hazel Lynskey, will be kept in the role until it is deemed safe to hold the meeting.

Cllr Lynskey had been due to hand over the chains of office to Cllr Eric Broadbent today.

Service understands that the council’s intention is to have Conservative Cllr Lynskey serve an 18-month term with Labour Cllr Broadbent then doing the same to get the schedule back on track for 2022/23.

Cllr Roxanne Murphy of the Independent Group was to have been named as Deputy Mayor, taking over from Cllr Roberta Swiers of the Conservatives.

The mayor is the town’s first citizen and has the civic responsibility of representing and promoting the borough as well as chairing meetings of the full council.
