Golf is back on course in the Scarborough area after the Government allowed golfers to return to action last week. Golf, along with angling, tennis and basketball, were the sports which were allowed to resume, and North Cliff Golf Club, South Cliff and Golf Club Filey Golf Club and Snainton Golf Club were among those to re-open.

At North Cliff, Jim Hughes was first on the tee at 7.30am on Wednesday, with his partner John Collins.

Hughes said: “Fabulous morning at Scarborough North Cliff, our thanks to the club manager Jo, Andy the professional, and all the greens staff, for making it possible.

“This is not the ‘new normal’, it is just temporary.”

The duo were followed at 7.42am by Marc Tyson, who said: “Beautiful this morning, rough was interesting, stay safe and stay on the fairways, thanks to all the staff for all their hard work, course is in great nick.”

Club manager Jo Duck said, on Wednesday: “It’s great that our members appreciate what we have all done to enable golf to resume at North Cliff today.

“The Greens staff have done an exceptional job in maintaining the course in very challenging circumstances.

“In recent days we have welcomed several new club members from other sporting backgrounds to our ‘new to golf’ scheme, as other sports are unable to resume at present.”

Filey Golf Club has also noticed a boost in the number of people wanting to become members.

Filey’s club captain Stuart Fish said: “The first days of golf under the new strict rules imposed by England Golf have been a huge success.”

Another boost for grass roots sport in the area came on Friday as the England and Wales Cricket Board announced new guidelines for outdoor cricketing activities.

The statement said, regarding individuals: “Only one-to-one coaching is permitted per session.

“Nets should be used on an ‘every other’ basis, leaving one net free between nets.

“We recommend using your own equipment if possible.

“If equipment is being shared, please follow UK Government’s guidance on the sharing of equipment.”
