Bank holiday weekend did not bring crowds to the coast
The sun is set to shine again in Scarborough this weekend with the Met Office forecasting clear skies and sunshine from Friday into the start of next week.
Recent warm weather combined with the relaxation of lockdown travel restrictions has seen people travel to spend time on the beaches.
However, Scarborough Council’s deputy leader says she is “very grateful” to those who stayed away from the coast over the last bank holiday weekend.
Cllr Liz Colling said that while the borough was busier it was not to the level of the scenes of beaches in the south of England that were crammed with sunseekers.
Cllr Colling said: “I think the weather helped as it was very windy on Saturday and Sunday before it got better on the Monday.
“I took a walk along the South Bay on Monday and there were people on the beach but they were all keeping their distance. The tide was out so that helped as there was more room.
“It also helped that the roads had been closed, which I think is a fantastic idea as it gives people space to spread out when they are walking.
“We have heard there may have been some issues inland, particularly around Beck Hole in Whitby with a large number of people gathering and I think the police have been informed about that.
“You cannot control everybody and it seems like there are some people who are determined to make trouble regardless of what environment they are put in.”
Cllr Colling also said it appeared there had not been a repeat of the previous weekend’s scenes of rubbish being left on Scarborough’s beaches.
She added: “So my biggest thanks go to those who stayed away, I am very grateful.
“And to those who did come, I say thank you for taking care when you were here.
“The message from me stays the same, stay home and save lives. If you do want to come then check the weather as if it is too hot then there is nowhere to shelter and likewise if it rains then you can’t nip into the shops.”
