Awards have been presented to the team who took Filey Lifeboat’s fundraising weekend online, helping collect over £9,000.

John Ward, George Atkinson and Dougie Ward have been presented with RNLI Excellence in Volunteering certificates for their efforts in ensuring the pandemic did not stop the annual event which raises money for Filey Lifeboat Station.

Together they produced two days of virtual entertainment which was viewed on Facebook alone by over 160,000 people, and which raised a staggering £9,200.

John, who is Filey Lifeboat Station Press Officer and retired deputy second coxswain, said: “All three of us are very grateful for this award.”

John selected the themes and programme for the weekend, and approached supporters to ask if they would make their own films.

He also contacted a range of special guests to advertise the weekend on video, secured copyright permission and then thanked all the contributors for their support afterwards.

Dougie, who is a student at The University of Nottingham and hopes to follow a career in marine engineering, is a crew

member of both lifeboats.

He sifted through the thousands of photographs and videos, selecting the most suitable to accompany the programme, and helped choose accompanying

music as well as formulated the story lines and storyboarding

George, who is a student at The University of Hull and hopes to pursue a career in computer science, produced

the final version of the virtual weekend, spending dozens of hours merging film, photographs and sound and stringing them together to ensure that the weekend ran smoothly and to time.
