Thank you for help after fall from hand cycle

- Chris Cammish, West Park Avenue. Scarborough

I JUST want to say thank you to the four people who helped me on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 14.

There was a couple walking down Cross Lane with their two beautiful collie dogs who crossed over to make it easier for me on my hand cycle to be able to cross over at Mayfield Avenue. I managed to get from my house with no trouble until then, when I hit a stop cover and kerb edge which threw me off the footpath and into the path of the gentleman in the car coming down Cross Lane and another man coming up Cross Lane.

Luckily, the person who was driving down Cross Lane towards Burniston Road managed to stop in time.

All four of those very helpful people came running over to check me out and make sure I was okay. I thought I was, so they managed to get my wheelchair off my legs and place it back on the footpath and then picked me up, while all the time the two collies just sat and waited.

The car drivers also kept asking me if I needed a lift home instead of me riding my hand cycle, but with me being an ex-motorcyclist, you start off on your journey and if at all possible you finish under the same means (what my wife calls stubborn). I got home after a lot of perseverance from me for them to let me go.

When I got home and managed to get into my normal wheelchair, I realised that I was bleeding from my elbow and had pain in my shoulder so I rang 111 and was told to go to A&E. After a noticeable wait I got checked out and found that I needed seven stitches, X-rays and a head scan, but was allowed home at 3am. My wife waited up for me to ring her when I could come home, luckily it was just before she started work back at the hospital at 5.30am.
