Air pollution at dangerous level along seafront Help with book research on William Holt

- Tom Farrell,

Snainton

Lairs Lane,

ON SATURDAY, April 17, I walked from Scarborough town centre down to Foreshore Road and Marine Drive completing a circuit between 12.30-3.30pm. I was wearing a Flow monitor which measures the pollutants, including Nitrous Oxide, PM10 and PM2.5. These pollutants are generated by carbon emissions, and because they were on the seafront, could only come from vehicles.

The data I downloaded, which I have passed to the council, showed high/ dangerous levels of air quality.

I was walking past queuing traffic most of the time, but it was telling me that when I stopped for 15 minutes at the end of Marine Drive (adjacent roundabout) some of the highest levels were recorded, which are dangerous to health.

In view of these facts and the council’s declaration of a climate emergency in 2019, I am calling for two things to happen.

Firstly, at least seasonally, they should place measuring vials on the seafront.

Secondly, the manifesto of the Labour Party promised car free Sundays on the seafront. Nothing has been done about this.

This should be implemented this summer, with buses dropping near the Spa and Marine Drive roundabouts. Pedestrians and bikes can then enjoy more space without breathing in noxious fumes.

A business opportunity for bike hire could be created, with a view to a seafront cycle lane linking to a coastal route.

A £1 park and ride would help to encourage motorists to take the bus to the seafront.
