The donkeys have returned to Scarborough’s South Bay beach, with riders able to trot up and down the sands on the back of a four-legged friend.

Guy Smith, whose family have been running donkey rides on the beach since before the First World War, is hoping for a strong summer season as restrictions from the coronavirus pandemic ease.

He said: “It’s been quite steady, people are out and about, albeit social distancing, it has not been too bad – I’ve known a lot worse times!”

Ahead of the bank holiday weekend, Mr Smith said: “I anticipate we’ll be quite busy on Saturday and Sunday; the weakness might be the weather!”

“I think we’ll be fairly busy this season,” he said.

Having returned to the beach on April 12 when restrictions eased, the weather has thrown everything at them, though the donkeys “aren’t too bothered about it” and have been treated to extra winter food!
