Bethany hits fundraising heights with peak challenge in her home!
This kind-hearted Hunmanby girl has raised hundreds of pounds for local NHS heroes by scaling Ben Nevis – without leaving her own home.
Bethany Bridge-Lane has undertaken a virtual climb of Britain’s highest mountain by walking up and down the stairs of her house.
The nine-year-old, whose mum Sonia is a paramedic based at Scarborough Ambulance Station, has raised an impressive £1,700 which will go to ICU nurses and teams at five of the area’s ambulance stations.
Sonia said her daughter was inspired by Captain Tom Moore, whose fundraising for the NHS captured the nation’s hearts.
“She started by saving her chores money and then came up with the idea of going up and down the stairs,” said Sonia.
Bethany, a pupil at Hunmanby Primary School, worked out that going up and down her stairs 500 times would equate to the same distance needed to climb the famous peak.
By taking on 100 stair ascents and descents every day for five days, she has completed her fundraising mission.
“It took her about an hour and 40 minutes each day,” said Sonia.
“I did a few with her and it was quite hard work!
“She wanted to do it for local ambulance staff but also for nurses in ICU because we talk about them a lot and she knows they are such brave people.”
The money Bethany has raised, through an online fundraising site and thanks to donations from neighbours, family and friends, will be split between the ICU nurses at Scarborough Hospital and ambulance stations in Scarborough, Filey, Whitby, Malton and Kirkbymoorside.
Sonia says the nurses’ money may be spent on a party for the ICU team or another kind of thank-you gesture, and each ambulance station will be bought a bench.
“Because of coronavirus, we’ve had to eat our lunch and other meals outside so this will give us somewhere to sit,” she explained.
“We’ve tried to hide it from her but she’s obviously picked up how hard the pandemic has been for us all,” she added.
“I can’t believe what a caring soul she is. She’s so heartwarming.”
