Eastfield man Robert Platt is taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Mr Platt, 59, decided he wanted to do something to help people, after seeing so many people struggling through the pandemic.

With the help of his fiancee, Julie, they decided to support Martin House Hospice, a charity that helps children and young people with life limiting conditions to live a full life. They also offer end of life care, and support to families in bereavement.

Mr Platt said: “I have done the Three Peaks before, but that was 15 years ago.

“It is the first time I have done something like this for charity.

“The challenge on June 15 is being organised by Kuta Outdoors, so there will be 14 other people in the group, but I haven’t met any of them yet.”

Kuta Outdoors is a West Yorkshire based business that specialises in UK-wide hiking and outdoor team building events.

Mr Platt, who is a machine operator at Osprey Plastics in Eastfield, has been training consistently since the start of the year, going out every weekend walking with Julie. She is not taking part in the challenge but has been supporting him throughout.

He said: “We have just been staying locally up to now, because of Covid restrictions.

“I devised my own training plan, and have made sure we get out every Saturday and Sunday.

“Julie has been very supportive in joining me on the walks and we have just started to go further afield.

“We are hoping to get to the Lake District as part of the last preparations for the challenge.

“I am feeling confident, and I have raised £530 of my £1,000 target. People have been so generous and supportive, everyone from friends and neighbours to local businesses.”

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is situated in the Yorkshire Dales. The route itself is 24 miles and includes 1,585m of ascent.

The walking challenge consists of climbing the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, usually in under 12 hours.
