ALLERSTON Flower festival

A flower festival will be held this weekend to raise funds for repairs to St John’s Church, Allerston, which will cost around £50,000.

The theme for the festival is ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 70 Glorious Years’.

We will have an opening event tonight (May 5), 6.30pm, in church with music, prosecco and nibbles. Tickets £5.

The festival will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday, May 6-7, 10am-7pm, and on Sunday, May 8, 10am-4pm.

Entry is by donation to the repair fund.

Refreshmen­ts will be available in the adjacent village hall, 10am-4pm, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a closing service in the church at 4.30pm on Sunday, May 8. All are welcome to attend.

BURNISTON AND CLOUGHTON Chair exercises

Chair-based exercise class on Mondays at Burniston and Cloughton Village Hall from 11am. Classes £5, but first one is free. For more details contact Janette on 07906 426068.

Playgroup

Children’s playgroup suitable for babies, toddlers and preschool children on Tuesdays (term time only), 1.30-3pm, in Cloughton Community Hall.

WI meeting

The next meeting of the of the Burniston and Cloughton WI in Burniston and Cloughton Village Hall will be held on May 12, 7pm. Two of our own members, Jackie Housham and Virginia Stokeley, will give illustrate­d talks about their experience­s in the Far East (China and Japan respective­ly) where both have family members currently or previously residing.

CAYTON

Methodist Church

The service last Sunday was led by local preacher Mrs Ann Bell from Bridlingto­n. The welcomer was Christine Feather, the steward Patricia Henny and the organist Jane Allen.

During the service readings were given by Christine Feather and Patricia Henny.

Flowers for the church were provided by Gwyneth Russell, and refreshmen­ts after the service were served by Alison and Brian Smuk.

This Sunday the worship will be led by local preacher Mrs Kath Charter and all are welcome to join us at 10.30am.

Women’s Fellowship.

Meetings are normally held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 2.15pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and join us and at the meeting on Tuesday, May 17, when the Rev Andrew Moreland will be speaking to us.

Coffee mornings

All welcome to join us at the community coffee morning on Monday, 10am to 12 noon, and enjoy a cuppa and a chat.

Private chat or prayers can be arranged if needed.

CROSSGATES U3A meeting

Scarboroug­h U3A are having a cuppa and a chat at Crossgates Community Centre tomorrow, Friday, May 6.

All welcome (you don’t need to be a member). The cost is £2 for coffee/tea and biscuits (unlimited refills) and there will be cakes on sale.

Come and relax in the large hall, meet up with friends, have a chat and if you are interested, find out about U3A.

HUNMANBY

Pop-in group

Hunmanby pop-in group meets every Friday from 10am at Hunmanby Community Centre, Stonegate. We offer a range of activities and occasional­ly have trips out. The group also includes chair exercises for anyone who wishes to join in. All welcome.

OSGODBY

Bingo night

Bingo was held in the community centre and 17 members attended. The cashiers and callers were Moira Audsley and Janet McNamara, checker was Christine Hastie, raffle sellers were B Oxtoby, J McNamara and C Render, flyer seller was C Render, and the flyer winners were C Hastie and D Dawson. Hostesses for the evening were E Whiteman and C Moreland.

Join us at 7.15pm every Monday, all welcome.

Weekly events

Weekly events held at the community centre include Pilates, Yoga, Keep Fit, Handicraft­s, Open Circle, Midas Touch Singing Group.

On the second Wednesday of each month the Scarboroug­h Philatelic Society is held, and the coffee morning is held on the third Wednesday, 10.3011.30am. If you would like to join any of the groups contact Bryan Bolton on 01723 581548 for further details. The centre can also be booked for meetings, parties, etc at the rate of £8 per hour.

RAVENSCAR AND STAINTONDA­LE Charity teas

The event last Sunday at Moorland House for the Red Cross Ukraine appeal made a record £1,036. Congratula­tions to Lisa and Alan and all their willing helpers.

The charity tea afternoons at Moorland House, Staintonda­le, will run until September.

Other charities to benefit are: Sunday, June 12, Guide Dogs; Sunday, July 3, Blood Cancer UK; Sunday, August 7, Rainbow Centre; Sunday, September 4, Martin House Hospice. Due to the success of these events, the organisers would be very pleased to receive donations of extra garden tables or chairs.

Craft group

The craft group is now meeting again on Thursdays, 10am to 12 noon, at the Ingrid Flute Gallery in St Hilda’s Church.

Everyone welcome, whether you knit, stitch, embroider, crochet etc. The Post Office will also be open to use.

Jubilee crafts

The craft group working towards decorating the village with a Platinum Jubilee Mile is now meeting regularly in Staintonda­le Village Hall on Thursdays, 2-4pm.

Donations invited for knitting/crochet items, wool, buttons, beads, purple and silver paint, old hosepipe to make hoops for decorating, also old umbrellas etc.

Country Cluster

The next meeting of Country Life Cluster on Thursday, May 12, 7pm, will be Moments of Mindfulnes­s led by Di Wilson from The Healing Touch.

History group

The history group is returning to evening meetings for the light nights, and the next meeting will be at 7pm on Tuesday, May 17, in Ravenscar Village Hall following its reopening.

The Ravenscar section of our archives located at the hall will be open for your inspection and research. All welcome; refreshmen­ts available.

Christian Aid

Frank and Griselda James will be selling plants from their stall outside the former shop and post office.

The dates for the village hall country markets have been revised. They are May 14, July 2, August 13, September 24, November 26.

Jubilee celebratio­n

A celebratio­n of the HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be held in Ravenscar Village Hall on Friday, June 3, 7pm. Please bring your own drinks/ nibbles and friends.

District show

Classes include: children’s fancy dress, horticultu­re, agricultur­e, produce, preserves, arts and crafts, photograph­y, vintage tractors and equipment and children’s section.

Scalby and Newby WI members will be busy this month attending the Survivor Event on South Bay on Saturday, May 7; the craft afternoon on May 12, 2pm, in the Friend’ Meeting House; Catch Up at Palm Court on May 18, 12.30pm; Book Club on Tuesday, May 31.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church

Sunday’s service was led by Jean Donovan who spoke about how Jesus wants to speak to us and we should open our ears and eyes to our loving and giving God.

This Sunday’s service at 10am is the all age service (everyone together).

The Thursday coffee morning is from 10am to 12 noon in the church rooms opposite the church, all are welcome.

Methodist Church

The service on Sunday was taken by the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry stewards Bob Jackman and Margaret Light and the offering taken by Sheila Gray.

Bible readings from Acts were given by Denise Earnshaw and St John’s Gospel by Michael King. In his sermon Kevin reflected on Saul’s conversion to Christiani­ty and Peter’s betrayal of Jesus, both were forgiven and found that Jesus’ love for them was still there. It is our Christian belief that love can come again and overcome hate.

During the service Holy Communion was celebrated.

The preacher this Sunday at 10.30am is Patricia Henney, all welcome.

WI meeting

Seamer and Irton WI’s next meeting is on May 18 there will be a talk by Matt Barnes on marine conservati­on.

Tickets are now on sale for an afternoon tea with two of the original Calendar Girls in the memorial hall on June 22, contact Jan Braidley for a ticket.

SHERBURN

Family quiz

The village hall is holding a family quiz on Sunday, May 15. Doors open 2pm, quiz begins 2.30pm.

A maximum of five people per team and the cost is £1 per person. Includes refreshmen­ts and raffle. Proceeds for Sherburn Village Hall.

The next service will be on Sunday, May 22, 10.15am, all welcome.

There will be no coffee morning in the village hall today, Thursday, May 5, due to the hall being used for the elections.

The following week the coffee morning will be held on Friday, May 13. All are welcome.

Open meeting

The next open meeting will be held on Monday, May 16, at the earlier time of 6pm at Sherburn Village Hall to discuss plans for the Queen’s Jubilee.

The jumble sale is on Saturday, May 7, at Weaverthor­pe Village Hall, 1-2.30pm.

Guest speaker

The next meeting of the of the Scarboroug­h Philatelic Society on Wednesday, May 11.

The speaker is Martin Snowdon who is travelling from Middlesbro­ugh to give us a presentati­on on ‘Fake, Forged and Fantasy’ in relation to the propaganda of World War Two.

Meetings at library

The next meeting of the Scarboroug­h Civic Society is on Tuesday, May 10, 2.30pm, at Scarboroug­h Library, Vernon Road. There is a charge of £2 per member or £3 for visitors.

Ray Blyth will give an illustrate­d talk entitled Yorkshire Landscape Curiositie­s - Buildings in Context. Ray has worked as a garden history tutor and is familiar with country estates in Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

FRIENDSHIP CENTRE New venue

LIFEBOAT GUILD

Ascot race day lunch

The Scarboroug­h Ladies Lifeboat Guild is hosting an Alternativ­e Ascot Race Day Lunch to be held at Park Manor Hotel on the North Bay on June 16, 12-6pm.

This is not just a fundraisin­g event for the RNLI, but also the guild’s way of celebratin­g the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The day will start at 12 noon with drinks reception on arrival followed at 12.30pm by a welcome from the chairman. Then seating at 12.45pm for a two course lunch.

Starting at 2.30pm with live televised racing from Ascot, you can have a bet on your favourite horse (£2 minimum). Racing will continue throughout the afternoon with a break for refreshmen­t at 4.30pm.

FAMILY HISTORY

May talk

Ryedale Family History Group continues with its series of talks through Zoom; with the next talk on Wednesday, May 16, 7.30pm.

The talk is called Transporte­d Across the Sea by popular speaker Les Mitchinson.

Les will be highlighti­ng a case study and following a 19th century petty criminal who is sentenced to transporta­tion to Australia, and how everything turns out alright in the end - a happy ending.
