Mixed aces get off to a flying start in league

-

Hackness and Scarborough Tennis Club kicked off their new competitive season last week with its six teams in the Driffield and District League.

Unfortunately at a very late stage the club has had to drop their Ladies A team from division two, writes Mark White.

The Mixed team, playing their home matches at the Pindar Indoor Tennis Centre got off to a flying start with a win against Sledmere D by five rubbers to four.

In a very competitive match with all the Hackness and Scarborough pairs contributing to the victory, Steve Brindle and Jean Blenkiron scored two rubbers as did new signing Steve Jepson and Julie Boddy leaving Jim Mellor with Michelle Harrison to add the important last rubber.

In the Ladies section the newly-promoted B team came up against very strong opposition from Pocklington in Division Three at their picturesque Hackness ground.

On a cold night the home team went down 6-3 despite winning the first round and were leading 2-1 at this stage.

Pam Mcfee and Jean Blenkiron won two rubbers, the best on the night with Julie Boddy and Michelle Harrison taking the one.

Judy Milburn and Hester Butterworth went home empty handed although they had two very close rubbers and did themselves proud.

The Hackness and Scarborough team fought valiantly, played good tennis and they are sure to win more than they lose in this competitive division.

The Ladies C team started their new league campaign with an excellent 6-3 success in Division Five.

There were two debutants, Jane Thomson and Hannah Longman both having just joined the club.

Hannah Longman and Theresa Glassett won all three of their rubbers with a dazzling display.

Jen Fell and Jane Thomson picked an important two rubbers leaving June Stephenson and Gail Kerr to add one to the team score.
