Depleted Hackness A team see off Burton

-

The Hackness Men’s A tennis team also started off with a sound victory at home to Cherry Burton in Division One despite three of their normal first-team squad unavailable.

Liam Mellor filled in for his father, long-term club coach Jim Mellor and playing with Patrick Robinson took all their three rubbers including two on tie-breaks.

Leighton Scott, the pick of the players from last season teamed up with another young player John Ellison took two rubbers leaving the experienced pair of Martin Glassett playing with Paul Zac to pick the final rubber.

A very good start to the season and a victory to build on and challenge for the league title once again.

The Men’s B Team were not so fortunate.

They had to travel to Beverley and East Riding, the reigning league champions for their first match in Division One.

They had a difficult time and failed to win a rubber. Bryan Edwards, the team captain played with P J Guthrie,

Marcus Brown played with club stalwart Steve Brindle and new pairing Jonathan Bramley partnered Steve Jepson.

The result was not unexpected. It was known that the team were going to struggle, but it was good that some of the new and young players experience tennis at this level.
