Pull me, push me – art which you can touch
The Old Parcels Office Artspace in Scarborough builds on its reputation for showing excitingcontemporary art with its latest family friendly exhibition of moving sculptures by Johnny White and Amanda Wray. Breaking all of the rules about ‘Do Not Touch’, visitors are invited to press buttons and pull to activate the large scale moving sculptures.
The works are inspired by everyday experiences, feelings and pivotal moments in life.
Families and children will love the quirkiness of the things they encounter in the exhibition and the works also ask us to consider what it means to be human.
Talking about the show, Johnny White said: “My work has always had an element of humour, this is especially so in my kinetic pieces where it seems to be an unavoidable part of the process of making animated figurative sculptures. Our work has followed various themes, but is often a take on our personal experiences of the world.”
Amanda said: “We use a lot of different materials, often recycling things, and there’s always a lot of playing and having fun in making the work.”
Sally Gorham, chairwoman of the Old Parcels Office Artspace, said: “This exhibition really is a little bit different and will appeal to the whole family.
“It’s great that artists like Johnny and Amanda are supporting us by bringing their work to Scarborough and helping us to establish the Old Parcels Office as the Yorkshire
Coast’s leading centre for contemporary art.”
Following an initial opportunity to collaborate on a commission in 1995, Johnny White and Amanda Wray have worked together on many projects combining Johnny’s humorous kinetic style with Amanda’s curious and unusual figurative sculptures.
Johnny and Amanda work in neighbouring studios in Derbyshire and continue to collaborate on projects while still working independently to create their artworks.
The exhibition runs at the Old Parcels Office Art Space, Scarborough Railway Station, from Saturday August 6 to Sunday August 28.
The gallery is open each Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
Admission is free.
