Ladies B secure Division 3 safety with defeat of Filey
Disappointing end to Driffield League campaign as men’s teams all lose out
The Hackness and Scarborough Ladies B team finished their season with an excellent win against their local rivals Filey in Division Three of the Driffield and District Tennis League.
It was a match they had to win to ensure their survival in the division and in a very tight battle they got over the line by five rubbers to four.
Hazel Cross and partner Michelle Harrison had a great night taking two rubbers as did Heather Butterworth and Julie Boddy.
Sue Barraclough, playing with Vicki Calow, added the vital fifth rubber although they just missed out on a second.
So the points went to the visitors who very deservedly ensure their status in division three next season.
The Men’s A team, which started the season so well have lost the last four matches including the latest at home to Brandesburton A in Division One.
The visitors brought a much stronger team than anticipated and took the match by 6-3.
Leighton Scott was back in form playing with Roger Amstell took two rubbers and PJ Guthrie and Graeme Scott added the third, a good display from them.
Young Tom Hunt, a regular
in the team all season played with Jim Mellor but the failed to add to the team’s rubber count.
The team will finish in mid table, a disappointing end to what started out as a real prospect of ending as champions.
The Men’s B team’s result against champions Pocklington A was always going to be a foregone conclusion.
Playing for the first time in Division One they have lost every match so the 9-0 result
away was never in doubt.
Bryan Edwards was back with his former partner Mark White and they didn’t disgrace themselves by taking a few games.
Martin Glassett partnered one of the club’s best young players in John Ellison and another youngster Marcus Brown played with Paul Jackson.
So it is back to division two for the Hackness and Scarborough Men’s second string outfit.
It was always going to be a tough ask for the season but the team is probably back were they belong.
The Men’s C team, in their determination to stay in Division Four, put out a strong side at home against the best team they have encountered so far, Beverley Town.
The result eventually went the way of the visitors 5-4.
Father and son team Matt and Martin Lowe, regulars in the B team last season put on a terrific performance in taking
all three rubbers.
Paul Zac with Steve Brindle added the fourth rubber but Steve Jepson and Tony Owen couldn’t add to the scoresheet.
However the results from other matches on the night seem to indicate that the team are safe.
