Call to back A64 dualling

-

Pleas for a strong message to go out from the Scarborough and Ryedale area for the planned new dual carriageway scheme on the A64 have been made by a long-standing campaigning councillor for the upgrading of the busy trunk road.

County and borough councillor David Jeffels is urging business leaders, parish councils, the tourist industry and the public in general to support the longawaited scheme to upgrade the stretch of the A64 between the Hopgrove Roundabout

to Barton-le-Willows crossroads near the Jinnah Restaurant, being planned by Highways England.

Cllr Jeffels said the upgrading of the A64 in general has been urged for decades, not just on the grounds of boosting the local economy but also on safety grounds. The A64 is recognised as having one of the worst safety records of any major road in the North of England.

Cllr Jeffels said: “It is vital that a strong message is sent to Highways England and the Government for the scheme to go ahead. Our two MPs, Sir Robert Goodwill and Kevin Hollinrake, are working to generate support through the Department of Transport and a strong case made locally will add considerably. This is the most positive opportunity we have had to progress the upgrading of the A64.”

An exhibition is being held at the Milton Rooms, Malton, on August 23 from 2pm to 8pm. Also, brochures can be obtained from the libraries at Scarborough and Malton. The consultation period ends on September 5.
