National open water gold joy for Moment
Scarborough’s Joseph Moment has won a gold medal at the Open Water National Age Group Championships.
Moment won the Boys 16 Years 5k Gold medal at the Swim England Open Water National Age Group Championships.
He set a time of 1:02.35 as he pulled slightly clear of the next three swimmers after a close battle at the front.
A group of five swimmers pulled ahead of the rest of the pack and led the field all the way until the finish.
Kingston upon Hull swimmer Moment just had the edge in the closing stages as hefinishedaround37seconds ahead of Daniel McGuiness (1:03.12) who swam well to finish second.
It was a close battle for the silver medal as Daniel Moyses fromtheCityofPeterborough (1:03.16) was just four seconds offMcGuiness(BasildonPhoenix) as he won bronze with Jamesplant(1:03.25)onlynine seconds off a podium place.
On his win Moment said: “It went really well, it’s my first open water race so I’m just looking to build on this and see where it goes.
“The race was really enjoyable with a close battle at the end.
“The finish really spurred me on, towards the finish I started sprinting but I wasn’t awarehowfarIwasawayfrom the line so we kind of dropped off and then started sprinting again but I really enjoyed myself.
“This is the last race before a bit of a break for me so it’s good to end it on a high.”
Proud dad Kevin Moment said: "Joseph has worked so hard this year attempting to maintain his training, whilst studying for his GCSE’s.
"He travels to Hull four or five times a week and is part of Kingston upon Hull SwimmingClub’sElitePerformance Group where he trains under head coach Tom Rhodes coupled with his training in ScarboroughwithhiscoachHywel Jones.
"It amounts to 14+ hours a week in the pool including 5am starts plus land training.
“BothTomandHwyelhave goneaboveandbeyondinsupporting Joseph over this last year and we owe them a huge thank you.
“The gold in the Swim England Open Water National Championships for his age group has come after competing at the British Championships in July in four events, achieving two top 10 finishes and the Swim England English Championships gaining a sixth-place finish in the 100m freestyle final.
"He has shown such dedication and commitment to training this year and it is fantastic to see such hard work paying off.”
*A warm evening once again greeted the Active Filey Time Trial racers at Burton Flemingforthefourthintheir six-event series.
Twenty riders lined up to start at one-minute intervals with the fastest racers starting last.
Once again Vive Le Velo racer Mel Blackford won with
Matt Pilling in second place and Duncan Smart in third spot.
Fastest female this time was Filey nurse Kay Walters (28:54) just pipping Rachel
Pitchforth (28:56).
