Star Mead nominated for UEFA award

-

Whitby’s England Lionesses star Beth Mead has been nominated for a top UEFA award.

Former Sunderland Women star Mead has been named in the three-woman shortlist for the UEFA Women's Player of the Year.

This is the second international award nomination in as many weeks for the Arsenal Women winger, who was shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or Feminin alongside Vivianne Miedema earlier this month.

Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas and Wolfsburg midfielder Lena Oberdorf complete the shortlist. Oberdorf featured in the German side that came second to England's Lionesses at this summer's UEFA Women's Euros.

Mead was named Top Scorer and Player of the Tournament, while Oberdorf received the Young Player of the Tournament award. Putellas won the UEFA Women's Player of the Year award in 2021/22, other previous winners include Pernille Harder, Lucy Bronze, and Lieke Martens.

Mead has sent records tumbling in a superb 12 months for the forward.

She is the first player to score in every group game in the finals for England, with five in total including a winner in the opening match against Austria and a treble in the 8-0 demolition of Norway. She also broke a 61-year-old record set by Jimmy Greaves of 13 international goals in a season, which she passed prior to the Euro finals starting.

Earlier in the season, she also became the first England woman to score a hat-trick for her country at Wembley Stadium, in a 5-0 rout of Northern Ireland.
