Autumnal events await

The best of the summer holidays may be behind us but there is no shortage of events on the autumn horizon. Here is the pick of coming festivals and special days.
Saltaire Festival, September 9 to 18
Saltaire Festival takes place annually in September in the village of Saltaire, on the outskirts of Bradford. A celebration of the arts, community and the village’s unique history, the festival usually runs over a period of 10 days and attracts more than 30,000 people to enjoy more than 100 events.
Great North Art Show, September 10 to October 9
Great North Art Show is held every September in the magnificent surroundings of Ripon Cathedral. It has an established
reputation as one of the premier leading art exhibitions in the North of England presenting work by some of its finest professional and emerging artists. Every year they welcome thousands of visitors from all over Great Britain and overseas.
York Book Fair, September 9 and 10
York Antiquarian, Rare and Out of Print Book Fair is Europe’s largest, offering a wonderful range of books for experienced collectors and first-time buyers alike.
Super Soapbox Challenge Bridlington, September 11
A great day out for all the family with continual commentary and all the action visible on large format screens. As well as the excitement on the course itself, there’ll be a funfair, live music and lots of local food and drink outlets to
choose from.
Hull Science Festival, September 10
An exciting programme of demos, workshops and shows for all the family, it is all taking place on the University of Hull campus later this summer.
North Yorkshire Coastal Ramble, September 10
Join Yorkshire Brain Tumour Trust on their North Yorkshire Coastal Ramble from Scarborough to Whitby.
A new walking challenge for 2022 is Cinder Track. Totalling 21.5 miles, this route is just inland from the stunning North Yorkshire Coast.
Yorkshire Fossil Festival, September 16 to 18
The festival seeks to enlighten and engage families and young people in the world of geology and earth sciences. Visitors can become immersed in all things fossils and
dinosaurs, many originating from Scarborough and the Yorkshire Coast.
This year’s Yorkshire Fossil Festival has a spectacular new look and host Steve Cousins, also known as The Rock Showman.
The event will also be held at the Sun Court, part of Scarborough Spa Complex.
Black Sheep Big Birthday Bash, September 17
In September Black Sheep Brewery is turning 30, which sounds like a proper reason to party! You are all invited to the Black Sheep Big Birthday Bash for a full day of felicitations at the Masham brewery.
Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival, September 17 and 18
The two-day festival attracts more than 40,000 people. Expect streets lined with quality produce, talented local
musicians and entertainment for all the family.
Yorkshire National Gardens Scheme, until September 22
The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales, raising impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.
Nidderdale Show, September 19
Nidderdale Show aims to celebrate the best of agricultural traditions with top class livestock, horse and dog sections, boasting one of the finest exhibitions of animals anywhere in the UK.
NYMR Annual Steam Gala, September 22 to 25
Join North Yorkshire Moors Railway for its annual steam gala with up to 13 locomotives
in steam. The lineup of visiting locomotives include LNER A4 Sir Nigel Gresley No. 60007, BR Standard 5 No. 73156 and No. 85 Taff Vale Railway Class 02.
Ride behind the guest locomotives and home fleet engines across the four days with services calling at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt (by request), Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby stations.
Scarborough Jazz Festival, Scarborough Spa, September 23 to 25
The lineup includes Os Caros – The Edison Machada Project, Nicola Farnon and Dave Newton Trio, Dennis Rollins’ Funky-Funk, Lunar Octet, Alan Barnes and Dave Newton, Bansangu, New York Brass Band, Ben Crosland’s Solway Stories Shirley Smart Trio and John Law's Re-Creations.
