HISTORY

Hitler: The Lost Tapes,

Saturday, C4, 8.10pm: The fascinating documentary series exploring the work of Heinrich Hoffmann and his photographic assistant, Eva Braun, in capturing images of Adolf Hitler continues with a look at how they both depicted the Fuhrer off-duty. Although the cine-camera footage shot by Eva was more intimate, Hoffman also took photographs of Hitler seemingly relaxing in the company of both dogs and children. However, these images were use strategically in both Germany and abroad to soften the dictator’s image and distract from his cruel policies.

GLAMOUR

Diana Dors: Britain’s Blonde Bombshell, Saturday, C5, 9pm: The Netflix movie Blonde has got people talking about Marilyn Monroe again, but this documentary turns its attention to our homegrown blonde bombshell, Diana Dors, pictured below. Her career took in theatre, film, TV, easy listening records and sitcoms, yet some critics have suggested that the 1956 movie Yield to the Night, in which she gave a powerful performance as a woman awaiting execution, was one of the few times she really got to showcase her true talent. This documentary explores her remarkable life, including the scandal that led to her being denounced as a ‘wayward hussy’ by the Archbishop of Canterbury Geoffrey Fisher.

GAME SHOW

Blankety Blank, Saturday, BBC1, 9.10pm: Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds is one of the celebrities taking the plunge in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, but tonight’s live show isn’t the only place you can see her. She’s also joining Denise Van Outen, Chris Eubank, Frank Skinner, Vick Hope and Joey Essex on the celebrity panel for the first in a new series of the revamped classic gameshow, which has been rescheduled from last week. Bradley Walsh is back to read out the statements and invite the contestants to fill in the blanks, which will hopefully match what the celebrities have written down.

DRAMA

Karen Pirie, Sunday, ITV/STV, 8pm: Val McDermid recently hit the headlines when she revealed she could not be dubbed the Queen of Crime because the phrase had been trademarked by Agatha Christie’s estate. She certainly has some way to go before she produces as many works as Christie, but in modern terms, she’s at the very top of her game. TV series based on McDermid’s plots have been made in the past, including Wire in the Blood, and the latest promises to be a big hit. It stars Lauren Lyle as DS Karen Pirie, a cold case investigator who lets nothing stand in her way of unearthing the truth. The series co-stars ex-EastEnder Emer Kenny, who also penned the screenplays. The drama begins as Pirie is asked to undertake a cold case review of an unsolved murder which took place in 1996.
