Filey youngsters are on top of the World
A team of Filey Sailing Club junior sailors have returned from the World Championships with smiles on their faces.
Thomas Whitehead (Age 12, Norton College), Daniel Whitehead (Age 10, Hunmanby Primary School), Molly Wilson (Age eight, Filey Junior School) and Harry Wilson (Age six, Filey Infant School) spent several weeks of the summer holidays at Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy (2012 Olympic Sailing Venue) competing in World Championship Sailing events.
In the first week of racing, Thomas and Daniel Whitehead competed in their two person RS Feva against 185 top Youth Sailors from around the World.
They completed 14 races over five days which included a first place position in one race.
Overall they brought home a Silver Medal for GBR in the Junior Category (Under-13).
In the second week, Thomas, Daniel & Molly competed in their RS Tera Sports.
They raced over four days and completed 13 races.
Thomas had some really close racing with his competitors and his brother.
Thomas was lying first overall after two days of racing but had nail biting battles with a Lithuanian sailor and other Great Britain sailors to finish fourth overall.
Daniel had some excellent races with his best result being a 2nd place and beating his brother over the finish line. Daniel finished ninth place overall.
Molly Wilson was one of the youngest sailors in the competition and battled hard in the strong winds, always with a smile on her face.
Molly’s best race result was a 19th place and finished the Championships in 39th position.
Harry Wilson took part in the separate coached regatta fleet in his RS Tera Sport, where he received race coaching from the professionals and enjoyed every minute of it.
