ST MARK’S CHURCH – St Mark’s Church, Newby, holds a community drop in with coffee and cake every Wednesday, 2-4pm. Toddler and Baby Group, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10-11.30am, term time. Cost is £2 per family/carer/ childminde­r and includes fresh fruit, activities and hot drink for adults.

St Luke’s Church, Stepney Drive, holds chair exercise classes, Thursdays, 10.30am. METHODIST CHURCH – Monthly charity coffee mornings will start on Saturday, October 1. The 25th anniversar­y of the Rainbow Centre is our first fundraiser.

Coffee and biscuits served 10-11.30am, there will also be stalls selling books and home baking. Admission by donation for the Rainbow Centre, all welcome.

WI MEETING – Members of Scalby and Newby WI met up after the summer break to enjoy an illustrate­d talk by Rebecca on the history of the Whitby jet industry.

SCALBY WIVES – Scalby Wives group were once again entertaine­d by Tim Tubbs, this time with a talk entitled 'Muck Raking – A Scandal Through History.'

He detailed changes over time in journalism and gossip columns from the 1920s to the year 2000.

Noting the Roaring Twenties, London's high society, London of the Swinging Sixties, high profile spy stories, soap operas, gossip columns, and more latterly the dramatic rise in the availabili­ty of social media.

The next talk on October 10 will be by Nigel Morton entitled Jewellery and Gemstones, 7.30pm, at St Lawrence’s church rooms, Scalby.
