Making sure a Lidl store has everything a community needs to do their shopping takes a huge

amount of hard work and teamwork. A lot happens behind the scenes meaning customers don’t always see it. Keeping our shelves stocked and customers happy takes lots of different skillsets and many people don’t realise how varied a Lidl role

can be. At our Pickering store, that means a job at Lidl can often surprise you.

Steven joined Lidl three years ago as a Customer Assistant and has worked his way up to his current role as a Shift Manager. For him, the most surprising thing about joining was the sheer variety in his role.

“No day is ever the same. One day you’ll be on the tills, the next working with stock – and, for me, as Shift Manager, I also get to run the business when our Deputy or Store Manager isn’t here. That variety makes my job really exciting.”

Having so many different responsibilities ensures every shift is different to the next but for

Deputy Store Manager, Mark, that just means a job well done every day. He’s been at Lidl for 16 years, including six at the Pickering store. “It can be challenging but it’s very rewarding. I really enjoy working with customers and our brilliant team.”

It’s not just variety of work that makes Mark excited for every shift. His colleagues and the culture at Lidl mean that even when things

get hectic, there is always someone there to support him or lighten the mood.

“Everyone really looks out for and supports each other. There’s a really nice balance here and everyone brings something different to the team, whether it’s experience in retail or just other life skills. There’s a lot of jokes and fun along the way.”

Steven also highlighted his colleagues as something that really made the Pickering store stand out. “We all get on really well. It’s like a family atmosphere and we’re always having a laugh which makes coming to work an absolute pleasure.” Lidl prides itself on making sure all colleagues can balance work with their other commitments, whether

it’s family, studying or some extraordinary hobby. Shifts cover

weekends and weekdays with varying starts and finishes, and all rotas are available three weeks in advance to make sure everyone can make the most of their days off. “The shift patterns are good” says Mark. “There’s lots of variety which makes for a brilliant work-life balance.”

For colleagues like Steven who want to progress quickly, there’s always

training on offer to build skills and increase responsibilities. And for

people who want steady work for a reliable employer, Lidl’s hourly rate of £10.90 to £12.00 for Customer Assistants and £11.90 to £13.00 for Shift Managers, 30 to 35 days’ holiday

(pro-rata), generous pension scheme and 10% store discount make it one of the best workplaces in the area. But for Steven and Mark, it all comes back to the people. The whole team gets together socially a couple of times a year which only brings everyone closer together. “We always do a Sunday night so everyone can

make it and we all put our ideas in the hat so we can go somewhere that works for all of us.” Mark explains. “It’s really important we all get on because that makes working here so much more fun because we’re sideby-side every shift.”
