Aces hit top form at club championships
The Hackness and Scarborough Tennis Club Championships were played last month.
The club championships were well supported this year with over 50 matches being played over a two-week period.
The matches were made up of the main draw and a consolation plate draw for the first round losers in each event all superbly organised by Jim Mellor.
The Men’s Singles was an excellent contest between to very strong young players Liam Mellor and Matt Lowe neither of whom had won the Championships before.
Eventually Liam took the title 6-2, 6-2 in a match full of good tennis.
He then went on to secure the Men’s Doubles with partner Pat Robinson in a more one sided match against Marcus Brown and Vova Stelmakh a 15-year-old Ukrainian who has recently joined the club 6-1, 6-2.
Sue Kendall once again was strong in the ladies draw defending her title, taking the Ladies Singles against Hester Butterworth, in a tightly fought match winning a third set tie break 10-8.
Sue then went onto secure the ladies doubles with sister Jackie Speakman in another hard fought match
against Judy Milburn and Michelle Harrison 7-6, 6-1.
The Mixed Doubles was another enthralling match for the crowd again decided on a 10-point tie-break.
Paul Zac with partner Jackie Speakman eventually coming out on top against Jim Mellor and his worthy partner Judy Milburn 10-4 in the tie break after both pairs took a set.
The Plate results were Steve Brindle won the Men’s Singles against Vova Skelmakh 6-4, 6-1 and Hannah Longman beat Andrea Shrimpton in the Ladies Singles 6-0, 6-0.
In the Men’s Doubles David Michell and Peter Lee were the winners against Louis Fell and Tony Owen 6-3, 7-5 and in the Ladies Doubles there was another exciting tie-break with Hester Butterworth and Jan Fell eventually succeeding against Harriet Davis and Chris Barnard 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
The Mixed Plate saw yet another tie-break with Sue Kendall and Steve Bottomley beating Jan and Louis Fell 6-4, 4-6,10-8.
