STREAMING
High School, Amazon Freevee, streaming now
Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara Quin are identical twins who, in 2019, published a memoir entitled High School, which details their formative years in Alberta, as well as their first forays into music. It’s now been turned into a new TV series, the first four episodes of which are immediately being made available, with two more airing each subsequent Friday. TikTok stars (and real-life siblings) Railey and Seazynn Gilliland take the lead roles. The coming-ofage tale follows the Quins as each of them battles to find their own identity, a task made difficult by those who regard them as almost the same person.
PROFILE
Tommy Steele: The Great Entertainer, C5, 8.30pm, Saturday
These days, if you mentioned Tommy Steele to a teenager, they’d no doubt look at you with a very baffled expression on their face before returning to TikTok, or whatever social media phenomenon is all the rage these days. For some reason, Steele’s image has not stood the test of time, despite him being Britain’s first rock ‘n’ roll star back in the 1950s. This profile looks back at how the
Londoner – born Thomas Hicks in 1936 – became the Harry Styles of his era before reinventing himself as a musicals star in the West End and on Broadway.
SPORT
Rugby League World Cup, BBC One, 1.15pm & BBC Two, 7pm, Saturday

Coach Shaun Wane, left, and his side, captained by Catalans Dragons star Sam Tomkins, go into this year’s tournament ranked third in the world, and will be looking to get up and running with a victory over the 2017 quarter-finalists.
COMEDY
The Larkins, ITV & STV, 8pm, Sunday
The gentle, sun-kissed adaptation of HE Bates’ much-loved stories is back for another series. The cast will once again be led by Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan as the much-loved Pop and Ma Larkin, but there is a major change within the family – Joelle Rae is replacing Sabrina Bartlett as Mariette. A new family are also set to make waves; the Jerebohms waste no time locking horns with the Larkins on their arrival in the village.
LOOKING BACK
Emmerdale – 50 Unforgettable Years, ITV &
STV, 6pm, Sunday
On October 16, 1972, a gentle rural soap was born. Back then, it was known as Emmerdale Farm, the village it was set in was called Beckindale and it was broadcast at lunchtime. The series, designed to last just 16 weeks, was created by Kevin Laffan and told the story of the Sugden family; they were first seen gathering for a funeral. The initial run was a big success, so it was expanded to 26 weeks, then six months… and the rest, as they say, is history. Since 1977, Emmerdale has had a prime-time slot, and it hasn’t looked back since, constantly succeeding in the ratings, and adopting bigger and bigger storylines which have sometimes courted controversy while keeping the public hooked.
