LOCAL HISTORY – Brompton and District Local History Society held its inaugural meeting of the new season on Wednesday, October 5, in Brompton Village Hall. There was a good attendance and the evening started with a brief annual meeting conducted by new chairperson Derek Mathers.

The most important part of this meeting was the presentation to Chris Evans of a book token in recognition and thanks for his unstinting work in running the society for the past 50 years.

The new committee were duly elected and will be Derek Mathers chairperson, Marylyn Bland secretary/treasurer, Di Ford programme secretary, plus additional committee members Reina Beecroft, Anne Tidd, Lynne Heaton and Sue FitzPatrick.

Guest speaker was John Oxley, formerly the city archaeologist for York before his retirement in 2019. His talk entitled, Painting with Light, described the fascinating art of making stained glass in England from the 7th century until the present day.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 2, 7.30pm, where the guest speaker will be Marie Woods who will give a talk about Snainton Church. New members will be very welcome. COMMUNITY LUNCH – The next Village Ventures community lunch will be held on Wednesday, October 19, served from 12.30pm and will have a seasonal touch.

Lunches will now be held on a seasonal basis rather than every month with the next one being the Christmas meal on December 14. In the intervening months there will be a range of coffee mornings and afternoon teas for people to attend. New volunteers would be welcome to help, so do come to the next lunch and make yourself known to the team.
