Euros star Mead second in Ballon d’Or

Whitby’s Beth Mead was named as the Ballon d’Or runner-up on Monday night, just a few days after she scooped the PFA Vertu Motors Player of the Month for September in the WSL.

Hinderwell hot-shot Mead was second to Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas in the Ballon d’Or.

Mead led the way from the start of the new season with three goals and two assists for the Gunners in their opening two fixtures to earn the WSL award.

The Arsenal number nine opened her domestic account with two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion before scoring and assisting in yet another 4-0 victory, this time at the Emirates Stadium against North London rivals Tottenham.

Mead played her part in helping the Gunners to a 1-0 triumph at Reading on Sunday evening, maintainin­g their 100% start to the season, which leaves them second in the Women’s Super League table behind Manchester United on goal difference.

The 27-year-old beat Maya Le Tissier (Man United), Rachel Daly (Aston Villa), Fran Kirby (Chelsea), Kim Little (Arsenal) and Kenza Dali (Aston Villa) to win the award.

The PFA and Vertu Motors have also announced winners from the Premier League, EFL Championsh­ip, EFL League One and EFL League Two , with Erling Haaland (Manchester City), Nahki Wells (Bristol City), Conor Chaplin (Ipswich Town) and Andy Cook (Bradford City) picking up the Fans’ award.
