Boro’s run ends with poor defeat

-

After their recent run of good form, Scarborough Athletic, unchanged from Saturday's battling win against Telford, slipped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Alfreton on Tuesday.

After an evenly contested first half, the hosts dominated throughout the second period to run out worthy winners, with home keeper George Willis not having a save to make all game.

Boro created the first chance, when Kieran Glynn played a terrific through-ball to Michael Coulson, who laid off to Luca Colville, and he fired narrowly over.

Alfreton enjoyed a good 15 minute spell in which Will Thornton blocked a shot from Dale Southwell and a Southwell shot was saved by the legs of Cracknell.

Alfreton skipper Matt Rhead got his head on a cross from Southwell, but Bailey Gooda blocked, then Cracknell dived to save a snap-shot from Rhead.

Ciaran McGuckin had a 25-yard shot charged down by Danny Preston early in the second half, but that was as good as it got for Boro.

Dom Smith had a strike blocked by Glynn, before they opened the scoring on 53 minutes when Smith lashed in a shot and the ball deflected off Bailey Gooda and sped past Boro keeper Cracknell.

The hosts doubled their lead on the hour when Southwell sent a free kick towards the far post, Smith headed back into the goalmouth and Cantrill drilled hard and low into the net.

Glynn showed flashes of genius, Jackson never stopped running, and Burton was strong at the back, but it just wasn't Boro's night.
