NOVEMBER 3, 1975: The Queen opened the North Sea pipeline, the first underwater, bringing 400,000 barrels ashore each day at Grangemout­h Refinery on the Firth of Forth. NOVEMBER 4, 1979: Iranian students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and held more than 60 people hostage.

ON THIS DAY LAST YEAR: The highly anticipate­d John Lewis Christmas advert was unveiled, starring a young alien experienci­ng her first Christmas. NOVEMBER 5, 1990: Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the far-right Kach movement, was shot dead after a speech at a New York City hotel.

ON THIS DAY LAST YEAR: Abba released Voyage, their first studio album in nearly 40 years. NOVEMBER 6, 1935: The RAF’s first monoplane fighter, the Hawker Hurricane, made its maiden flight.

NOVEMBER 7, 1935: Australian pilot Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith flew over Calcutta on a flight from England – and was never seen again.
