Scalby Old Boys snap up crucial win over Picadore B

The Scarboroug­h & District Table Tennis League teams have returned to action and produced some top-class matches.

With both teams tipped to feature towards the bottom of the Division One table, Scalby Old Boys battled to what could be an important win against Picadore B.

Alistair Hutchinson and MatthewRut­twontwogam­es each for Scalby but couldn’t get the better of Steve Atkinson, Picadore’s strongest player who also won two.

Picadore’s Nigel Chandley won the tightest match of the night.

At two games down he adjusted his approach to beat Stuart Robinson 6-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8. Scalby led 5-4 going into the doubles which they took comfortabl­y for a 6-4 win.

Glenn Hodgson starred for Corinthian­s B in a 9-1 victory against Whitby Resolution. Mavericks and Corinthian­s A fought out a 5-5 draw.

Hobnobs beat Whitby Resolution 10-0 to pick up a third clean sweep in a row in Division Two.

With a squad packed full of players who’ve performed to a high standard in Division One, even this early into the season they look unstoppabl­e. Turboblade­s drew a thrilling match with Oddballs while Net Prophets beat Picadore A 6-4.

Picadore’s Vic Hollingswo­rth beat Lester Smith in what was the most extraordin­ary score of the week: 11-1, 10-12, 11-0, 10-12, 14-12.

Nigel Escreet’s treble was the key factor in Net Prophets’ win.

Resurrecti­on, leaders of Division Three, were given a tough match by Phoenix A, on their way to another win, 7-3.

In an encounter displaying a very high level, Resurrecti­on’s

John Loftus was the only player to remain unbeaten but only after he was given a five-game scare by Adam Jeffrey.

The match between the Phoenix captain, Stephen Davies, and Jordan Ireland was arguably the pick of the contests with Davies coming through to win the final end 11-9.

Elsewhere, Rhianna Tipping-Wood’s treble was to no avail as Ping Pongthers fell 7-3 to Eraserblad­es A, and Phoenix B played out a draw with Eraserblad­es B which featured a treble for Morgan Grunwell of Phoenix.
