-

Scarborough’s mayor Cllr Eric Broadbent told how pleased he was to greet the royal couple at The Street. The Prince and Princess of Wales attended two venues in the town, The Street and the Rainbow Centre, to pledge £345,000 of funding to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing services.

Cllr Broadbent said: “It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

"There was a lovely crowd there to meet them.

“I was quite amazed, they looked brilliant, very relaxed.

"Kate was immaculate, and she had been in a helicopter for two hours!”

“I said to Prince William ‘I was very sorry to hear about your Grandma.’ He seemed to appreciate that and he said ‘Thank you very much’ and Kate said ‘thank you’ as well.”

Cllr Margaret Atkinson,

chairman of North Yorkshire County Council, was also among the dignitaries. She said: “Both were absolutely fantastic, they’re a lovely couple.” Scarborough borough councillor Janet Jefferson said: “It's wonderful for them to come here and recognise what The Street and the Rainbow Centre do

in this town.”

The police commander overseeing the visit, Supt Fiona Willey, said: “This has been a very special occasion for Scarborough.

"It is a privilege for North Yorkshire Police to play our part and we are delighted the royal couple enjoyed their very worthwhile visit.”
