Traffic flow takes its toll at junction
Re the traffic flow at the junction of Scalby Road and Woodlands Drive in Scarborough.
It seemed to work much better when traffic was divided into one lane for heading straight on and one lane for turning left to the hospital, crematorium, school and residential areas.
Following the recent roadworks, traffic going straight ahead can wait in either lane when the lights are on red. Two problems arise. First, a green arrow pointing left appears, while the straight-ahead light stays red. If the vehicle at the
front of the left-hand lane is going straight on, everyone behind must wait until the other light turns green. This makes the filter lane redundant.
The second problem is that when the straightahead light turns green, two lanes of traffic are required to merge into one, a short distance ahead. Drivers become inordinately competitive and tempers flare as vehicles vie for front position to reach Newby half a second sooner.
