Library group celebrates dialect through art

-

Yorkshire dialect will be celebrated at exhibitions in libraries around North Yorkshire in the run-up to Christmas and into the New Year.

The Ey Up! Project has seen libraries hosting workshops run by artists to work with hard-to-reach residents, including young people, military veterans and those with mental health issues.

The project has been led by North Yorkshire’s libraries in partnership with

Arts Council England and the Leeds University Dialect and Heritage Project who, alongside North Yorkshire Libraries, have provided funding.

At Scarborough, a group of seven MENCAP students, along with artist Dawn Brooks, met at the library over four weeks to create images to illustrate some of their favourite Yorkshire dialect words.

Initially the students designed the images on paper in pencil. When finished, they began to etch them on to plates, before ink was added and liberally rubbed into the outline of the image. Once this messy process was completed, the plates were put through a press to produce a printed image.

The work will be on show at the library before Christmas and throughout whole of January. Check with the library for more details.
