Concerns over traffic flow chaos

- SCALBY ROAD JUNCTION Denise Earnshaw, Ayton Road, Irton

Re the letter regarding the traffic flow at the junction of Scalby Road and Woodlands Drive (The Scarborough News, November 24).

In 2020 when the traffic light system and lane changes were made past the junction on Scalby Road, I wrote to North Yorkshire County Council about my concerns.

I think many other people also did as the traffic lanes past the junction were changed slightly.

They are, however, proving to still be dangerous as I have seen a lot of drivers becoming angry when the two lanes merge into one, and a few near misses.

It doesn't make sense to have a filter light if you are then unable to turn left as cars in front of you are going straight on, especially as that light goes to green before the light for going straight ahead.

I have seen the backlog of traffic caused by this, tailing right back past the Stepney Drive/ Woodlands Ravine junctions, especially at school times in a morning, and during the busy summer period. Just one car wanting to go straight on can cause all this disruption/delay.

The sensible thing to do would be for the filter light to be used for the traffic turning up Woodlands Drive to the hospital, the schools, crematorium and housing. After the junction, there should initially be two traffic lanes – one for the traffic wishing to turn left into the North Entrance of the hospital and one for the rest of the traffic. One lane after that would be fine. Surely this is only common sense!

I would be interested to see what other residents think.
