The winners of The Scarborough News Business Excellence Awards were announced at a glittering awards ceremony last Thursday.

In an evening in which over 300 guests gathered at Scarborough Spa, representatives from over 50 businesses came together to hear who had been selected as the best of the best.

The annual awards are a celebration of the business world –its companies and individuals– along the Yorkshire Coast and inland into Ryedale.

Among the honoured guests were Venetia Wrigley, His Majesty’s Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Sir Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, and Eric and Lynne Broadbent, the borough’s mayor and mayoress.

Judges for 2022 were Cllr Phil Trumper, George Roberts, Angela Fletcher, CEO of headline sponsor Happy Futures Support Specialists, and The Scarborough News Chief Reporter Louise Perrin.

Mrs Fletcher said: “In these difficult times, it is really refreshing to be able to recognise both individual and team achievements of local businesses.

“The nominations have been diverse, interesting and of a high quality, making it extremely difficult for the judges to make decisions.

“It was fantastic to see all the excellent nominations, from individual business owners who are just starting their journey to established businesses developing their products and introducing new concepts through research and innovation.”

The awards were hosted by TV presenter Duncan Wood, who laughed and joked with the winners as they came to the stage for their prizes.

Among the many memorable moments from the night was the disbelief and delight of Dani Bushby from The Farrier at Cayton, who won the Overall Business of the Year.

Angela Fletcher, who presented the award, said: “Despite not winning any of our categories, this business averaged over 80% in every category they entered.

“We felt that for consistency and overall performance, this business represented a rounded entry and was a perfect example of the type of business excellence which is representative of the Yorkshire Coast.”
