Northanger Abbey

1

Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, from now until Saturday, April 13

A new adaptation of a Jane Austen classic by Zoe Cooper.

Cath Morland knows little of the world and seizes her chance to escape her claustrophobic family life and join the smart set in Bath. Between balls and parties, she meets worldly, sophisticated Iz, and so Cath’s very own adventure begins.

Zoe Cooper said: “Northanger Abbey is a novel about friendship, love, romance and fantasy and how those things collide. “What struck me on my first reading as a queer 19-yearold, was that the central romantic relationship between the romantic heroine and her best friend, Isabella.

”It is that version of the book I wanted to explore in this reimagining.”

The new original musical is a powerful love story with original songs.

The production features a foreword narrated by actor and presenter Ross Kemp with a special guest appearance by the D-Day Darlings, one of the bestselling female groups to emerge from Britain’s Got Talent.

The musical is set in a number of Scarborough’s locations and is written by Steve Wallis with music by Nik Martin and features a mix of national and local talent – Zoe Wright and Scarborough-based Linda Newport, who have both appeared in Tony Peers’ summer shows at the Spa. “Scarborough’s inspirational locations, its local talent and the broad emotional range of the story combine to make this inspirational production a memorable work of love for all those involved,” said Wallis.

Based on the audiobook of the same name, Hannah – the Soldier Diaries features protagonists Hannah, a student hairdresser, and Jack a Lance Corporal who is serving in the British Army in the Afghan War. “These themes will transcend time, bringing into focus aspects of the human condition including loss, love and endurance, seamlessly linking the past and future together coupled with a sense of hope,” he said.
