Scarborough Hockey Club’s double success
Scarborough Hockey Club Women’s 1st team are celebrating a fifth promotion in eight years since reforming, inspired by Team GB’s Women’s Olympic Gold in Rio.
A rocky start to early fixtures left the women with a taller challenge ahead, however, training hard with new club coach James Fitton, and the addition of new club signings Beth Black, Mi a O’ Connell and Alice Walker. The challenge was met with a triumphant season run.
Success started from the back with shot-stopper Maddy Hill protecting the Scarborough goal behind the experienced centre-back pairing of Helen Holdsworth and Katy Outhart allowing Scarborough to take the game to the other teams. Kate Dibb showed commanding link-up play within the midfield, with O’Connell and Walker charging down the flanks.
One of many highlights proved to be the depth of talent with goals coming from many players in all positions, the team’s determination to capitalise on deflections and second chances coming from prime-positioned forwards such as Kathryn Bumby and Beth Black added to the goal tally.
The team are excited about the new challenges ahead in their new campaign starting this September in Yorkshire Division 2. They welcome any new and returning players to join their diverse and unique squad of ladies.
Claiming the top of the league and promotion to Yorkshire Men’s Division 2, Scarborough Men’s first team were well deserving of the league title.
The numbers speak for themselves with the best defensive record and only two losses, the 1 sts scored 116 goals.
Struck with availability issues-and-re-arranged matches due to wintry weather, upon the depth of 35 different players from the men' s section. Despite the disruptionsof personnel the hard graft in training paid off and the side met all challenges a united front to finish on top.
Reflecting on his first season as captain, Louis Rogers said: “I will take this success with me as my first league win and will always remember it, but above all, it was the effort, grit and determination from all players this season.
"I’ m very proud of everyone in the team, seeing how players improved over the season into the hockey players they are today, ultimately setting us up for a new challenge next season. Promotion not only is a positive to Scarborough Hockey Club,but also the local community .” Scarborough Men's 2nds finished a well-rounded seasonwithamid-tablestanding.
The team welcomes players with all levels of experience, whether that be somebody new to hockey, or somebody who has been away from the game for a while.
On top of all the success with the adult teams, the club is extremely proud of the growth and interest in our Junior section.
