Harvey and Landers claim Eastfield glory
The first Sunday of April saw a full field of 64 bowlers competing in a Drawn Pairs at Eastfield.
The draw did throw up some potentially strong pairings such as the first names out, Alan Landers (North Cliff) and Peter Harvey (Whitby) and also Ian Richardson (North Cliff ) and Gary Thornton (Borough).
It also threw up a number of pairings of experienced players and relative newcomers such as Stuart Thompson (Pontefract) and Carmel Flynn (Eastfield) and, inevitably, a few cases of clubmates being paired.
The first round saw a number of comfortable wins such as Landers and Harvey beating Adam Chilvers (North Cliff ) and John Burton (Eastfield) 21-9, father and daughter pairing Kevin and Katie Gates (both Dukes Park) having a 21-8 win over Ed McCormack (North Cliff ) and Steve Watson (Hunmanby) and Richardson and Thornton beating Steve Dover (Whitby) and Dave Moment (North Cliff ) 21-12.
There were also some very close games including Sue Emmerson (Whitby) and Marion Dudman (Robin Hoods Bay) with a 21-20 win over Ian Hadden and Ian Harland (both Whitby) and Thompson and Flynn’s 21-19 win over North Cliff ’s Kevin Garside and Les Craggs.
In the top half of the sec
ond round Landers & Harvey registered a 21-12 win over Emmerson & Dudman, Thompson & Flynn beat John Jarvis (Eastfield) & Geoff Watson (Whitby) 21-17, Tony Flynn (North Cliff ) & Kenny Wale (Whitby) won 21-16 against Jo Leeman (Whitby) & Pam Watson (Hunmanby) and Harry Old (Hunmanby) & Ashley Douglas (North Cliff ) ended the hopes of Tony Allen (Hunmanby) & Mo Chambers (Castleford) 21-10.
In the bottom half of the draw Robert Child & Scott Wardman (both North Cliff )
beat a Hunmanby pairing, Glyn Goodyear & Billy Holdsworth, 21-19 while Richardson & Thornton narrowly beat the Gates pair 21-20.
Geoff Oldham (Hunmanby) & Emmo Emmerson (Whitby) cruised through 21-10 against Josh Emmerson (Whitby) & Tony Chambers (Castleford) and Ronnie Noble (Borough) & Tim Purcell (Whitby) beat another North Cliff duo, Alan Lee & Nigel Trotter 21-17.
In the quarter finals Landers & Harvey finally ended the very good run of
Thompson & Flynn by 2117 and Old & Douglas won 21-14 against Flynn & Wale. Richardson & Thornton had a 21-13 win against Child & Wardman while Noble & Purcell won 21-11 against Oldham & Emmerson.
The first semi-final saw Landers and Harvey beat Old & Douglas 21-13 while Richardson and Thornton had an even more convincing 219 win over Noble and Purcell.
As is sometimes the case after a series of exciting games the final was a bit of an anti-climax although still featuring some good bowling.
Landers and Harvey scored a three and a one in the first two ends before Richardson and Thornton registered a score.
After five ends Landers and Harvey led 9-7 but they then won five of the next six ends, including a three and a four, to stand “All but” on 20-8.
Richardson and Thornton did stop the rot to some extent with two twos but Landers and Harvey then scored the single they needed to win 21-12.
