Hunmanby, Whitby and North Cliff secure cup wins
Last weekend saw several East Coast crown green bowls clubs play in the Eric Hutchinson Cup qualifying rounds.
This is a Yorkshire wide competition with all matches played on neutral greens,
Clubs are also guaranteed twomatchesasfirstmatchlosers are automatically entered in the Derrick Radley Trophy.
On Saturday Bridlington Bay faced Rastrick A (Huddersfield

District) at Whitkirk (Leeds) and, despite winning six of 12 games, lost 224-190.
Bay got off to a disastrous start losing the first four games to trail 37-84 but then only dropped 15 in the next eight games. The big difference was that three of the Brid players lost 21-9 whereas Rastrick losses were to 17, 18 or 19.
Dukes Park got off to a brilliant start against Denby Grange (Wakefield) at Colton (Leeds) winning the first five games, Kevin Gates (21-14), Brian Whitehouse (21-8), Katie Gates (21-10). Chris Taylor (21-20) and Sue Gormley (21-9) to lead 105-61. Then the wheels came off and only Alan Bambrook, 21-20, won in the remainingsevengamestocondemn Park to a 217-165 loss.
Whitby faced Holbeck Ltd (Leeds District) at Garforth Rec (Castleford District).
Holbeck led 150-137 after six, however Whitby’s last four, Peter Harvey, Paul Morgan, Jo Leeman and Kenny Wale (21-2) all won to record a 221-190 win.
NorthCliff’smatchagainst Kirkheaton Cons (Huddersfield) at Swillington (Castleford) was a big contrast to Whitby’s.
Cliffweredown66-70after four but then won the middle four to lead 150-113. The four winners were Pat Germaine 21-9,ScottWardman21-13,AllisonRoe21-11andBobDavies 21-10. The last four games were shared to give a final score of 216-172.
Hunmanby faced South
Leeds Cons (Leeds) at Magnet Sports (Leeds) and were in control from the start leading 82-55 after four games.
South Leeds did come back a bit in the middle of the match to 150-126 but three wins in the last four games put Hunmanby into the first round 228-175. Biggest winners were Peter van de Gevel, 21-7, and Harry Old. 21-6.
Sunday’s Doubles Merit at Westgate was called off due to waterlogging.
Friday sees the first Over60s Merit, a Doubles at Westgate and Sunday is the Mick Gates Open Doubles at Borough.
