Hunmanby, Whitby and North Cliff secure cup wins

Last weekend saw several East Coast crown green bowls clubs play in the Eric Hutchinson Cup qualifying rounds.

This is a Yorkshire wide competitio­n with all matches played on neutral greens,

Whitby faced Holbeck Ltd (Leeds District) at Garforth Rec (Castleford District).

Holbeck led 150-137 after six, however Whitby’s last four, Peter Harvey, Paul Morgan, Jo Leeman and Kenny Wale (21-2) all won to record a 221-190 win.

Hunmanby faced South

Leeds Cons (Leeds) at Magnet Sports (Leeds) and were in control from the start leading 82-55 after four games.

South Leeds did come back a bit in the middle of the match to 150-126 but three wins in the last four games put Hunmanby into the first round 228-175. Biggest winners were Peter van de Gevel, 21-7, and Harry Old. 21-6.

Sunday’s Doubles Merit at Westgate was called off due to waterloggi­ng.

Friday sees the first Over60s Merit, a Doubles at Westgate and Sunday is the Mick Gates Open Doubles at Borough.
