Russell’s Restaurant Smiddy House, Spean Bridge
Katrina Patrick tucks in to Scottish flavours cooked to perfection FOOD: My pre-dinner research told me that Russell’s has been awarded two AA rosettes for 11 consecutive years so I was more than looking forward to my meal.
After a peruse of the menu in the lounge with a refreshing mocktail, I could see I wasn’t going to be disappointed! I finally chose from the varied selection, and was shown through to my table.
The seared Isle of Mull scallops with Stornoway black pudding starter was a delight. I adore scallops, and these were cooked to perfection.
The main didn’t disappoint either – locally sourced loin of venison, tender and deliciously served with a roast garlic mash. I asked for the server’s recommendation of wine to complement the meat and was brought the manager’s favourite. Lovely.
Now for dessert. I was tempted by the Scottish cheeseboard, but true to my home city of Dundee, I opted for the marmalade pudding. It came with whisky and oatmeal ice cream in a brandy snap basket, and a side of Drambuie custard sauce. Heaven. 9/10
SERVICE: The staff were wonderful. The attentive manager, Robert, was particularly knowledgeable about the origins of produce used in each dish. 9/10
AMBIENCE: The dining rooms, although small, were not overcrowded or noisy. The décor was warm and clean. 8/10
VALUE FOR MONEY: Choice of two or three courses at £34.50 and £40.00 per person. Very reasonable when you consider these include an extra “taste from the kitchen” course and complementary freshly baked bread. 9/10
FACILITIES: The toilet facilities are a little on the small side, but the adjoining accommodation has a four-star Gold from Visitscotland.
