The earliest records of Kellie Castle go back to 1150, and its first known owner was Robert of London, son of William the Lion.

The castle and garden lie only a few miles from the Fife Coastal Path, which stretches from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Tay.

Robert Lorimer, who designed the gardens, died in 1929 and his ashes were buried not far from Kellie in the parish of Newburn.
