William Dickson
Invented the world’s first practical celluloid film while working for Thomas Edison. He was also the first person to direct and star in a film with live recording, and the first to make a film for Pope Leo XIII, who blessed his camera.
Duncan Phyfe
Born in Ross and Cromarty, Duncan emigrated to New York and became one of the finest cabinetmakers in America. His work is highly collectible; he was so popular he was known as the “United States Rage”. There’s even some Duncan Phyfe in the White House.
Victoria Drummond
The first woman marine engineer in Britain, first female member of the Institute of Marine Engineers. She got her start in Dundee and served as an engineering officer in the Second World War. She made 49 voyages.
