Blackness Castle

-

THE ship that never sailed”. Seems a strange nickname for a fortification, but the shape of Blackness Castle and its site jutting into the River Forth bears justification.

In fact, the north and south towers are called “stem” and “stern” and the central tower “the main mast”. It was built in the 1440s and after, the defences were strengthened in the 16th century, became one of Scotland’s strongest fortifications.

Over the next few centuries, the castle found use as a prison, ammunition depot and barracks. It achieved fame in recent years as a location for the filming of Outlander.
